How to Measure Your Face Shape: The Direct Method
Four measurements tell you your face shape. Get a flexible tape measure, pull any hair away from your face, and measure these four points in a mirror or with someone's help.
The 4 Measurements
- Forehead width:: Across the widest part of your forehead — roughly halfway between hairline and brows. Measure temple to temple.
- Cheekbone width:: Across the widest point below your eyes. Usually the widest measurement. Measure outer edge to outer edge.
- Jaw width:: From the corner of your jaw on one side to the other — straight across, not along the jawline.
- Face length:: Center of hairline straight down to tip of chin.
Reading Your Measurements
| Pattern | Face Shape |
|---|---|
Length > all widths, forehead slightly wider than jaw | Oval |
Length ≈ width, soft rounded jaw, full cheeks | Round |
Length ≈ width, jaw width ≈ forehead width, angular jaw | Square |
Forehead widest, narrow pointed chin | Heart |
Cheekbones widest, narrow forehead AND jaw | Diamond |
Length notably > width, straight parallel jawline | Oblong |
The Accuracy Problem
Self-measurement in a mirror is less consistent than it seems. Mirror angle, tape placement, and head tilt all affect readings. Most men get different results on different attempts. The other issue: the result forces a single label when most faces are a blend of two shapes.
Tape Measure vs AI Detection
Tape Measure Method
Manual 4-measurement process. Error-prone. Outputs single label. ~10 minutes. Different results each attempt.
AI Detection
468 landmark points. Consistent output. Returns blend % like 74% square + 26% oval. 10 seconds.
Bottom Line
If you want to understand the measurements, the tape method is educational. If you want a result you can actually take to a barber, use AI detection.
