What is a long face shape — and how do you style it?
A long face (also called oblong or rectangular) is noticeably longer than wide with a straight jawline. The styling goal is to add horizontal width and create visual breaks in the vertical length.
Blunt fringes, bangs, and wide side-parted styles all interrupt the vertical line of a long face. Side volume (rather than top volume) widens the apparent face. Glasses with wide frames also help. The key principle: anything that adds horizontal emphasis or breaks the top-to-bottom sightline reduces perceived length.
Which haircuts work for a long face — and which to avoid?
Quick-reference guide: add width, reduce length.
| Style | Rating | Why it works (or doesn't) |
|---|---|---|
| Wide crop with textured top | ✅ Best | Horizontal silhouette, no crown height |
| Side part with side volume | ✅ Best | Width at ear level, not vertical |
| Full fringe / textured fringe | ✅ Best | Creates horizontal break across forehead |
| Wide beard (flat bottom) | ✅ Best | Adds jaw width and reduces face length visually |
| French crop | ✅ Good | Flat top with fringe, no added height |
| Pompadour / quiff | ❌ Avoid | Adds crown height to an already long face |
| Slicked back long hair | ❌ Avoid | Eliminates all width, emphasizes length |
| Long goatee | ❌ Avoid | Extends chin area downward — worsens length |
